Under fire on immigration, Romney vows 'reasonable solution'

By Tom Cohen, CNN
September 20, 2012 -- Updated 0243 GMT (1043 HKT)

Brief Summary : Mitt Romney told Latino business leaders this week in Los Angeles that he is convinced the Republican Party is the rightful home of Hispanic Americans. Unable to close ground on President Barack Obama in the polls, the GOP challenger seeks to woo Hispanic American voters but finds himself hindered by the conservative stance he took on immigration policy in order to win the Republican primary campaign.

The Problem here is that Mitt Romney is trying to get more votes from the Hispanic , but because he  Wants to veto the DREAM act he is going to have problems doing so , unless he finds another solution and clarify his plans on what he is going to do about deportation and immigration .  Obama right now has the lead in Hispanic votes Romney has struggled to explain his stance on the issue because of the difference between what his party base demands and what most Hispanic Americans want to hear . I got a better understanding on the DREAM Act and how it is helping Young Hispanic people who were born or brought over to the United States from being deported and gives them a good education and a better life . Also I learned that a lot of people are against it because it is protecting Hispanic gangsters and criminals from being deported. I can use this information to predict the outcome Hispanic voters will have coming election day, how effective their votes will be. This article has an impact on the political arena today because Hispanic  voters can also influence the election results in 'nontraditional' states like North Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia. Hispanic voters are a diverse group and a crucial electorate that will determine the next president of the United States. Therefore in order to have a better chance at winning the election Romney needs to get their votes.

Obama above 50% in some battleground polls

By Paul Steinhauser, CNN Political Editor
updated 1:06 PM EDT, Wed September 26, 2012

Brief Summary :New polls in three swing states indicate President Barack Obama exceeding 50% support among likely voters and holding leads of nine to 12 points over Republican nominee Mitt Romney.Fueling those numbers, the four polls suggest that Romney has lost this edge on the economy, an issue on which the challenger has based his campaign.

While Romney's distractions last week over his controversial remark about Obama supporters might influence these polls, the economy appears to be a key to the Democrat's increasing advantage. The economy remains the top issue for Americans when it comes to their vote for president  and voters just do not think Romney will be good enough fix it. As a result, Obama throughout the campaign is presumed the more favorable candidate and he is currently leading the majority of the states  polls  . I learned of the importance the economy means to voters and how Americans care bout this topic more than anything. The author takes to The Democrats and Obama position because, they are talking about the difficultly Romney is having after his remarks about Americans and how citizens don't think he is capable of building a better economy , even though he claims he isn't worried about it . He also talks about the strengths of Democrats and why they leading in polls .  The three presidential showdowns are Romney's best chance to try and change the numbers but early voting is already about to happen in a handful of states making it harder to pursue voters.

Romney paid 14% effective tax rate in 2011

@CNNMoney September 21, 2012: 7:08 PM ET

Brief Summary: Romney took $4.7 million in itemized deductions and $102,790 in foreign tax credits, which likely represents taxes paid on foreign investments to other sovereign governments.
Romney and his wife, Ann, gave just over $4 million to charity, the campaign said. The amount includes more than $1 million in cash to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and more than $200,000 to the Tyler Foundation, which serves families of children undergoing treatment for epilepsy. They also reported more than $900,000 in noncash contributions.
But the couple chose to deduct only $2.25 million of their charitable contributions. The reason was "to conform" to Romney's that he never paid less than 13% in income taxes over the past 10 years, Brad Malt, a lawyer who presides over the Romneys' blind trust, said in a statement.

With 7 weeks to go, Obama-Romney race still tight

Brief Summary: Both Candidates are trying their best to persuade voters as time is decreasing. The
presidential race it looks stubbornly stable, and tight. President Barack Obama holds a tiny edge, Republican Mitt Romney is seeking a breakthrough message, and three debates are ahead in the campaign's final seven weeks.

I. Voters are still unsure of who they want to vote for.

II. This election is very close and even though Obama has a small lead Mitt Romney could catch up. However, he is having a hard time doing so and persuading voters to acknowledge his plans.
III. I learned that candidates have to spend Millions of Dollars to get their point across during election , and they really have to prove that their ideas, plans, are actually working and voters need to see progress. It is sometimes very difficult to persuade voters.

IV. This information can be of use to me because it allows me to realize and recognize that although Obama is in the lead it is not permanent and I can encourage other Obama supporters to vote and spread the word because nothing is set in stone yet.

V. The author in the article seems like they favor Obama more . They talk about alot of negative things going on with Romney right now and things voters aren't seeing in him like building on the economy and job losses . On the other hand, they talk positive on Obama and how he is leading even though it is a tight race.

VI.  This article is important in relation to all that is going on in the election. It is a crucial time for both candidates and there is little campaigning time left. Therefore each candidate much do his very best to capture the most prevalent issues of today and capture the voter's attention on how he is going to resolve, reconstruct, and redeem our country.

Romney: Nearly half 'believe they are victims'

Posted: Sep 17, 2012 3:10 AM EDTUpdated: Sep 17, 2012 11:51 PM EDT
By KASIE HUNT and STEVE PEOPLES

Brief Summary : Already scrambling to steady a struggling campaign, Republican Mitt Romney confronted a new headache Monday after a video surfaced showing him telling wealthy donors that almost half of all Americans "believe they are victims" entitled to extensive government support. He added that as a candidate for the White House, "my job is not to worry about those people."

I. The problem being addressed is the recent video that had been released to the public about Mitt Romney s views on tax breaks and people who don't pay them. He said in the video that he doesn't " care for those people".

II."There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it." This is shocking to many voters who probably were going to vote for him and their opinions about him might change. They do not want a president who is going to reject them because they can't pay or do not pay taxes. This also makes weakens Republican Party and Romney s chances of winning the election.

III. I learned from this article that About 46 percent of Americans owed no federal income tax in 2011, although many of them paid other forms of taxes. More than 16 million elderly Americans avoid federal income taxes solely because of tax breaks that apply only to seniors, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

IV. This information is of use to me because I now understand Romney's point on why he wants to do something about the tax cuts given to middle class and elderly. It is also useful because it informed me on who actually is paying taxes in the U.S. and who isn't.

V. I think the author has a neutral attitude throughout the article because they present facts on both sides about taxes and opinions from representatives from both parties about Romney s video and what they are going to do about it.

VI.  This article could have an impact on the political arena today because people who were going to  vote for Romney or who were undecided might change their views about Romney . Since he doesn't believe the government should not aide and support people who do not pay taxes could cost him the election and people who were voting for Obama might feel more confident in him since he believes in a "self  centered government" .  This video and the statements that came from Romney in the could give Obama an advantage in the election.
